How to plan an international trip?

Are you one of those people who often set out to organize their dream trip on their own, but in the end give up and recourse to the services of a travel agency? Because:

  • “well those cheap flights are only very early in the morning” or
  • “but the station is not in the city but 30 km away, how do I get around ?” or
  • “Ah, no! renting a car is very expensive ” or
  • ” this hotel has no parking , where should I leave this car?” or
  • “how exactly do I get to.. for example the Cathedral of Nice, it’s very confusing?” or
  • “how do I choose exactly which sights to visit?” a lot of reading is required, better to go with an agency and a guide.”

You swallow, but you still sign up for a vacation or a trip with an agency. Hopefully you have come across one of those that are really worth traveling with. They are few, but they are there. In most cases, however, you go home dissatisfied, because the group was with many people, some of them noisy, others constantly late, others – obsessive. Or the driver was not at the level you expected. Or the object you really wanted to see was not included in the tour. And you’re disappointed, but you don’t want to admit it.

Other people, however, do not give up so easily and at first sight manage to organize their dream trip. But it often happens that they also go home disappointed, because the result did not justify the expectations they had. Let’s see some of the reasons why this happens.

How to plan an international trip the most common mistakes made

Wrong destination selected

Especially if you are not traveling alone.

For example: your husband has organized a trip to France, but due to the short time available, he has focused on the Paris area , while you want to visit the picturesque Nice. And while you are walking, for example in Paris, your mind is always on the sea. Or you want to surprise a friend for her birthday and spontaneously organize a holiday in Morocco for her , without researching in advance whether your friend likes the Arab world or not and how she will feel there.

Suboptimally planned route

Some days your treks are hard and long, other days you wonder what to do. Or you decide  to spend the night in a different place every day, but you travel with someone who prefers a more sedentary lifestyle or comforts. Or you have prepared the route in such a way that it is not convenient for traveling with small children or disabled people. For example, a long journey without a gas station or a place to rest along the way.

Inappropriate season

Because incessant rain, strong wind or excessively high temperatures are capable of ruining everyone’s vacation.

This is not about off-season budget travel.

Too overloaded with sightseeing program

We’ve all been racing like crazy in pursuit of yet another landmark.

And the really valuable thing is, when traveling, not to rush to photograph another church for example, but to stop and immerse yourself in the local culture, atmosphere, as well as to communicate with the local people .

We emphasize the hotel too much

We spend more time in the hotel than outside. We focus more on what hotel to choose than what to see. Here, of course, I exclude trips for a different type of occasion.

We spend hours in traffic jams

We spend hours in traffic jams because we didn’t consider that it was a rush hour.

You may be on vacation, but other people are at work and students are at school. Choose your departure time and estimated arrival time carefully to avoid rush hour and not arrive in the end nervous and not in the mood for anything.

Do these examples sound familiar? Probably yes. And I can give dozens of other ones.

Therefore, my goal is with useful tips and guidelines to avoid these, at first glance, nothing and no stumbling blocks and to become the third type of people, those who organize the bear trip themselves and do it. Successfully so.

Save for later

Select the destination

How to choose the destination and be sure that it is the right destination for us? Here are some helpful questions to guide you and help you figure out the answer to this question.

  • First of all, answer the question why do you want to go there? Living a dream? The place has piqued your curiosity in some way. Why? Or are you following another trend imposed by social networks?
  • What is the purpose of the trip – a leisurely holiday or exploring the region? Are you going to spend your vacation there (summer, winter or vacation with the children ) or have you planned a short vacation, for example a long weekend?
  • Who are you planning to travel with? An extremely important question. If you’re on the same page as your companion, fine, but if you’re not?
  • Or maybe the trip was provoked by a specific event – a culinary or cultural festival, an exhibition, a concert. If so, do you plan to hang around or just come and go?
  • Did you come across budget airline tickets? And what happened to saving money for.., for example, Peru ?

I am often asked how I choose the places I want to visit. The answer is – photographic. I am excited by nature, unique architectureauthentic places, different people and cultures.

Think about what provokes you – historyarchitecture, cuisine, metropolises, shopping or colorful unique places.

Select a period

The period of travel is the next thing to think about.

Do a preliminary research to see if there is no major cultural or sporting eventa concert by a world-famous group or artist, a football match of a famous team, a business forum or an exhibition in the period you have chosen.

Because you run the risk of limited accommodation and high prices.

For example: when we traveled to Seville, it turned out that I had chosen to visit the two days just before the UEFA Cup final. I hadn’t bothered to check in advance and as a result we had to spend the nights 20 km from Seville, because the places to stay were occupied, and the few that remained free were priced sky high.

Another similar example is our trip to Cassis, a very small town on the French Riviera. Again, I hadn’t researched beforehand and found out the hard way that Cassis is one of the top spots for French tourists. We stood in a traffic jam for an hour to enter the town. We drove around for an hour to find a free parking lot, but there was simply none. We couldn’t go back because the exit queues were kilometers long. We eventually ran into a parking lot that showed some traffic, but we stood in line for an hour and a half to park. While we were waiting I spontaneously decided to look in Booking and I was shocked – there was not a single free bed in Cassis! We had hit the period when the French en masse go on vacation, but no one thought to check in advance.

What else should we consider?

  • If you travel during the tourist season for the chosen place, then do not expect peace and quiet. Consider booking tickets and accommodations early to make this trip happen at all.
  • If you do not like crowds of tourists and are looking for privacy, choose a period that does not coincide with the vacation season or school holidays.
  • Are you traveling on a budget? Then plan a trip outside the tourist season, when prices are significantly lower. And if you find cheap tickets, the period is not important.
  • If you’re a photographic traveler like me, it’s extremely important to choose the season carefully. You don’t want, I suppose, to photograph the bare branches of the trees or the dull dark green of the mountain in the summer.

I haven’t been to Paris yet. Many times I have been given the opportunity or have come across cheap plane tickets there. But! In my imagination, Paris is full of blossoming spring trees, and in my photos I want it to look exactly like that. That is why I have decided to wait and on some sunny spring day I will visit Paris.

Budget

It is good to set some preliminary budget for the upcoming trip. Fixed costs include air tickets, transfers, car rental, fuel, train and bus tickets, accommodation. To the non-fixed expenses, which at the end of the trip usually turn out to be quite a large feather, you can include food, drinks, parking, tickets for sights and attractions, souvenirs and gifts for relatives, water, use of a public toilet.

How to plan an international trip – currency, money exchange, how to pay?

Exchange currency in advance, exchange on the spot or withdraw from an ATM?

Inquire in advance if the country you are going to is allowed to bring in local currency. If it’s allowed and you don’t waste time afterwards, exchange money in advance.

In some countries it is more profitable to exchange currency on the spot, so bring US dollars or euros with you.

If you don’t like to carry large amounts of cash with you, choose the option to withdraw local currency from an ATM with a Revolut card. There are fees that vary by currency and amount.

How to pay?  I advise you to pay with local currency or card. This is valid for all locations in the world. You can pay almost everywhere with dollars or euros without a problem, but it is not clear the rate at which they will convert them for you.  Be careful!

How to plan an international trip – Visa regime

Do you need a visa for where you are going? Be sure to research the question in advance. It is extremely important to find out what the deadline is for the visa to be prepared so that you have enough time to submit the request. Find out how to submit the documents – online or on-site onlyHow much does it cost and how can you pay? Is it required to have a paper copy or is it enough to have the visa downloaded on the phone?

What should we travel with?

What is your preferred mode of transportation? Are you afraid of flying or sailing? Or do you have a phobia of many people in closed spaces?

I prefer to travel by plane and rent-a-car, and for longer tours to closer countries we travel with our own car. Here are the different ways to get around:

If you are traveling by car, anticipate the toll road fees and comply with the maximum permissible speed in the specific country.

Don’t forget to download an offline map if you’re traveling outside the EU .

  • a train
  • bus
  • sea, river or ocean transport
  • at a stop
  • a combination of the above

Recommendations for buying the plane tickets

For close destinations and short trips, I use low-cost airlines.

For nearby destinations to which, however, there are no direct flights I again choose low-cost companies by looking for a connection at one of the main airports. How you will combine the flights depends on the travel days, the route, the budget.

If you are planning a budget trip to a distant destination, follow the promotions of major airlines such as Turkish airlines, Qatar airlines or use search engines such as Scyscanner or Kiwi .

Recommendation:

Do not use low-cost airlines for transoceanic flights. I have bitter experience and I will advise you to think first of all about your comfort during a long 12 or 14 hour flight.

Rent a car

Very often people write to me on social networks or by e-mail, who for one reason or another are worried about renting a car because they “heard somewhere that..”, “read somewhere that..”, “he said, that..” . I have listened to so many myths and legends about rental cars that I could write a novel on the subject.

Why rent a car?

Here are the reasons why I rent a car and prefer this mode of transportation.

  • Traveling with a rental car is undoubtedly the fastest, easiest and most convenient way.
  • With rent-a-car you are not dependent on the time, you are not chasing a schedule.
  • With a rental car, you have the freedom to deviate from the route whenever you want.
  • The car is always at your disposal.

How to plan an international trip – useful tip:

  • In order not to waste unnecessary time, collect the car from the airport where you land and return it to the airport from which you depart. Make a reservation in advance, and at the airport you will only fill out the necessary documents.

Important!

Read the fine print!

Myths about renting a car

At this point, I want to talk about some of the car rental myths that are widely spread on social media or by word of mouth. I’ll debunk these myths by showing you how to rent a car step by step, using my family’s upcoming 10-day trip to Sicily as an example .

  • Myth number one – It is very expensive to rent a car. Is it true?

Let’s see. As I said, I’ll use our upcoming trip to Sicily as an example. Once again, I choose to trust Discover cars, which this year also wins the award for the best car rental site.

For a period I choose 31/08 – 10/09, start and end point Catania airport.

Here are the results. I settled on a 5-seater Fiat Panda, which for 10 days will cost us 103.85 EUR or 11 EUR per day for four people. Well, do you think it is expensive?

Important!

Don’t forget to get full car insurance. In this way, you will guarantee that you will not have to pay for possible damages, which in some cases are not small at all.

I add full insurance, which for the ten days costs 60 EUR and the price for four people increases from 11 to 16 EUR per day, which makes 4 EUR per person. Again, not expensive, right?

  • Myth number two – Deposits are too high.

Would you give your own car to someone in good will without asking for a deposit or without first agreeing on possible damages? Hardly. So why would car rental companies do it?

The deposit of the car I chose as an example is 750 EUR. I think that’s perfectly acceptable and within the bounds of normal, right?

The deposit, of course, also depends on the destination and the size and make of the car.

Important!

The deposit is deducted within 48 hours as soon as you return the car.

  • Myth number three – a rental car can only be rented with a credit card.

Yes, many businesses only accept credit cards, and for good reason. Others also accept debit cards, but in this case the daily rent increases or the deposit actually becomes higher. If you choose to deposit with a debit card, make sure you have enough funds on it to allow the amount to be blocked for the specified period.

In our example, a deposit payment by debit card is accepted, with an additional fee of 20 EUR per day.

My recommendation is to read everything carefully before booking. But don’t worry if you make a mistake, because Discover CarsRentalcars, and some of the other companies offer free cancellation without charging you any fee.

Insurance

Very often when traveling alone we forget or neglect to take out health insurance, but it is extremely important. Insurance costs a nominal sum, but it can save you a lot of headaches. So, next time, don’t forget it!

How to plan an international trip the dream itinerary

Here are some recommendations that will be useful to you:

  • Draw the optimal route according to the days you have and the period you have chosen.
  • Think about what places attract you more. Do you want to see more sights, museums and galleries or prefer to have fun? What attracts you more – history or your love for nature, animals, birds? What do you prefer – small authentic places or modern metropolises? Are you culinary tourists or, like me, do you choose the places photographically ?
  • If you are with children, include places that would pique their interest.

Where to with children in Europe?

  • If you are traveling with disabled and older people, consider the route with them. Avoid fortresses, narrow and hard-to-reach places.

I, for example, after recovering from a broken ankle, chose to travel to the French countryside, because the distances are short, the villages are quiet and peaceful, and the transitions are easy and pleasant.

  • If the trip is for a specific event, don’t focus only on it, but plan an extra day or two to explore the place and the surrounding region.

We often travel to rock concerts in Europe, but we never go just for the specific concert, we always add 2-3 days to make a short trip .

For example : we recently bought tickets for a rock concert in Milan, but we used the opportunity to visit BergamoLake Iseo and Lake Garda in addition to Milan .

How do I make my route?

  • I define on the map the mandatory places that I want to see.
  • I am looking for interesting places around them on the map. For example, a natural or cultural landmark, an authentic village or a place popular for example with traditional wine or food unique to the region.

Look out for eco villages, craft villages, waterfalls, caves, lake or body of water, places with a view.

  • I calculate the distance between the individual places and distribute the kilometers optimally .

Some places require a tour of no more than two or three hours , others are just for a photo shot, and others require days .

Even if the places you have marked for the day require a tour of an hour or two, still try not to visit more than two or three places in total. There is a risk that in the end everything will merge into one and you will not remember exactly what you saw and where you passed.

Accommodation

After we have already put together the itinerary, which of course can subsequently undergo some changes, if something else caught our attention or at the last moment we heard or read in a net publication that provoked our interest, it is time to book the nights .

How to plan an international trip – How to choose where to stay? Useful tips

  • If you are a traveler who improvises and moves without a previously drawn plan and program, we write in motion.
  • If you prefer to have everything booked in advance and not to wonder at the last minute where to stay, especially if you are with children, here are some guidelines that will be useful to you:

Budget

First of all, you need to determine what your approximate budget will be for one night. It’s very different whether you’re traveling alone, with a partner, or a family of four. The numbers vary greatly.

I can divide the price categories conditionally into four types: high, medium to high, medium to low and low price class .

I, personally, tend to stay on a budget and prefer to stick to the mid to low price range. But if an authentic house grabs my attention extremely, I go to medium to high .

Keep in mind, however, that the price categories are a little blurred, because I have stayed in extremely budget places that offer wonderful conditions, but in the process of searching, I have come across places in the high price range that have bad ratings. And having said ratings, that’s the next important thing I want to address in the article How to plan an international trip.

Ratings and Reviews

Be sure to look at the ratings and read the reviews so you don’t end up disappointedThe evaluation is based on several components – location, cleanliness, amenities, communication with the host. The reviews are extremely helpful and give a good idea of the place. Avoid places with no ratings.

How to plan an international trip – tips from negative experience

I booked an AirBnB for a concert in Barcelona. The apartment had no rating, which, frankly, worried me, but the location was excellent, the price was acceptable, and I decided to take a chance. I was wrong! At the appointed check-in time, no one showed up and no one answered the phone calls.

In the late hours of the day, dripping with fatigue after a whole day of walking around Barcelona, we had nowhere to stay. I contacted AirBnB for assistance, we chose a random hotel for which they refunded us, but later it turned out that my phone call with them cost the not so modest sum of EUR 90!

Type of accommodation

Regarding the type of accommodation, people vary enormously. Some value comfort and good service. Others don’t care where they stay as long as they have a roof over their heads. Some stay only in hotels, others prefer to rent entire apartments or houses . Some prefer secluded quiet places , others like big noisy resorts .

How to plan an international trip – useful tip:

Choose the accommodation so that you feel comfortable, not like a guest.

I, for example, do not like sterile hotels and usually stay in an apartment with a terrace or a house with a garden or veranda. I like to have air and space around me.

Check-in and check-out

Be sure to check the final check-in time, especially if you are arriving late at night.

If the apartment offers self-check-in and the host has sent you instructions by email with a code and password on how to get the key , then the check-in time is not a problem. But if the host has committed to meet you personally or the reception is open until a certain time, then there may be a problem with the later arrival time or you will have to pay extra.

Many places allow late check-in by prior arrangement. Don’t hesitate to ask the host if they offer this option before you book.

Meet the check-out time. It’s not nice to have the maid come in with the cleaning products while you’re still lying down.

Location

The location is undoubtedly one of the most important things. How to choose the best location when planning your international trip and why is it so important?

I will conditionally divide this point into two, because it matters whether you travel by car or public transport.

Choosing a location if you travel by car

The most important thing, if you are traveling by car, is to have somewhere to leave it. Therefore, it is recommended to choose a hotel/apartment/house or other type of accommodation that also offers parking.

What are the types of parking?

  • The accommodation has its own separate parking, underground or above ground
  • Parking on the street. It is usually free in more remote areas or small towns and paid in more central or historic urban areas. Paid street parking is paid for in several ways:
  1. per hour in advance (parking meter), for which you need to calculate the approximate time of your stay,
  2. for certain hours of the day, for example from 09:00 to 19:00 after which they are free.

Research in advance whether the parking lot in question does not enter a residential area and that parking is only permitted for those living there. If you don’t comply, it’s all too likely to earn you a fine without knowing it (it happened to us in Vienna).

  • Public free parking near the accommodation
  • Paid parking near the accommodation with a fixed price for parking. The host will give you coordinates with which parking lot he has an agreement to accept his guests’ cars.

Read carefully what type of parking the property offers. If, for example, you have a baby stroller or are difficult to move around , it is imperative to choose a parking spot.

Another important factor when choosing a location is the silence. Research the place in advance, is it near a noisy boulevard and restaurants? Or near the train station?

For me, personally, the ideal location is in a quiet place in the historic or central part of the city, which offers parking, but also meets my other conditions, such as budget and a coffee machine.

If I don’t find a similar place, I widen the search perimeter and choose a place that I can get to on foot or that has a convenient public transport stop. I avoid choosing places in the remote and outlying districts, because a lot of travel time is wasted. An exception is if I have booked an authentic house or a house with a pool and garden outside the settlement and decided to spend my evening there.

Choosing a location if you travel by public transport

In this case, it is logical to choose a place near a train station or bus station, especially if you have more luggage. And luggage is an important topic, on which I plan to talk about later :).

There are usually convenient public transport stops next to train stations and bus stations, so you can easily get to the center, the historic part or the places you intend to visit.

Important!

If you have chosen a place with a late check-in time or an early check-out time, use a luggage storage box so that you can make the most of your time and explore the place without having to carry your luggage with you.

Other amenities

Amenities are strictly individual and each person likes different things. But it’s still good to pay attention to the following:

  • Is the bathroom private or will you be sharing it with someone else?
  • If you have children, will you rent two separate rooms? Or you’ll book a bedroom with a living room and accommodate them on a sofa bed.
  • If you are on a higher floor, does the building have a lift or are there only stairs?
  • Does the place offer hair dryers or irons for example.
  • Does the room have a kitchenette or a refrigerator ?

Etc. the examples are countless. My advice is to read carefully both the description and the description of the room itself by clicking on it.

Other special requirements

If you are with childrenbook a place that has a children’s corner or is located near a park with a playground. If you are difficult to move, choose a place that offers the necessary conditions and comforts for you. If you don’t want children snapping and screaming around you, then book from the so-called Hotels for adults.

Read the fine print

Some locations require an advance cash deposit, others charge an apartment cleaning fee. I have come across advertisements that require additional payment for the use of sheets and towels. Pay close attention to exactly what is included in the price, because sometimes, misled by the low price, you may end up paying a high price.

Check the dates

Before pressing the Book button, double check that the dates are correct.

Luggage preparation

So – we have bought tickets, we have prepared the route, we have made a list of the sights and places we want to visit, we have booked the nights and the next step is this useful travel guide How to plan an international trip is to start preparing our luggage. This is one of my favorite topics and I have prepared a special post for it.

Remember – do not become a slave to your luggage and throw away all unnecessary items! You’ll thank me later!

For spring, summer and early autumn, as well as for closer destinations, I advise you to travel only with hand luggage. Not that it’s not possible in winter, but that’s aerobatics and I’ll talk about it another time. Forget the tons of cosmetics. Ditch the bulky clothes. Instead of jeans, opt for slim cotton pants that take up far less space. Choose t-shirts and dresses that are made of light material, wash quickly and dry in minutes.

Subscribe to my newsletter and I’ll send you a list of travel essentials absolutely free.

How to move after arriving at the dream destination?

We’ve arrived, we’ve settled in, now let’s see how we’re going to get around.

This, of course, can also be planned while preparing the route or choosing the accommodation location.

If we are in a small town or village, naturally we will move on foot . If we are in a bigger city, however, we need to think about how to get from point A to point B. Here are some options:

  • with the car we travel with, leaving it in a parking lot (use Google maps so you could see all the parking lots near you)
  • by public transport – bus, metro, tram. Big cities offer the so-called City pass or city card, with which you use public transport for free
  • with a tuk-tuk
  • with a scooter
  • with an e-bike
  • by bike
  • with hop on – hop off bus
  • with carriage
  • by taxi
  • with Uber

As you can see, the options are endless and what exactly you choose is entirely up to you. Of course, you can easily combine the different offers.

Attention!

Check what time public transport runs so you don’t have to take a taxi home if you’re staying further afield or traveling on a budget.

Landmarks

We also reached the sights. As I already mentioned in the previous points, answer the question of what exactly you want to see. As many sights as possible, galleries, museums or do you prefer to spend your time trying the local cuisine? Do you prefer to walk and enjoy the place in peace or run like me so you don’t accidentally miss something?

And when it comes to sightseeing, people are different and their behavior is different. Let’s see:

  • One type of people research all the sights in advance, often having read tons of literature about them and making a tight list of when, where and exactly what to visit . They have bought tickets to visit the sites in advance and are moving according to plan.

Buying tickets in advance is not a bad idea at all.

For some of the most popular places, it is imperative to buy a ticket in advance, because its validity has a certain date and time. If you want to visit a very popular site, you are taking a risk if you expect to buy a ticket immediately on the spot, because the chance of the seats being occupied if the site is at a certain capacity is too high.

Check opening hours.

It’s not uncommon for me to miss seeing something just because I didn’t check the opening hours. But I have already learned my lesson and now in each of my posts you will find information about the opening hours of each object that is present in the particular article, as well as a link to purchase a ticket in advance .

  • Another type of people like long talks and prefer to hire a local guide or tour guide and let him lead them entirely. Personally, talks bore me and I can’t stay in one place for a long time.
  • Still others prefer to improvise and go where their eyes see them.
  • I have heard from culinary tourists that the restaurants they will visit are more important to them than the sites they will see.

I am a little bit of everything. I make sure to see the object that provoked me photographically, and then I improvise. I like to wander around the small streets with local restaurants, to communicate as much as possible with the local people, to discover not so popular places.

Break the stereotype and improvise.

Alleys and small streets invariably lead to large squares and landmarks.

Don’t forget the little travelers too. Be aware of their capabilities and their pace. Don’t expect them to see the world through your eyes . Stop at a park, buy them ice cream, or take them to a candy store. And finally, reward them for their patience with a children’s attraction. Here is a list of some of the best children’s attractions in Europe.

Don’t restrict disabled people by making them wait for you in a park or cafe. Make sure they see the sights with a hop on hop off bus or hire a car with a driver.

Explore the region

Don’t just limit yourself to the perimeter where you are staying. See what opportunities and activities nearby towns offer.

If, for example, you are staying for three days in Nice , do not focus only on Nice, but organize day trips to nearby places such as half a day in Saint Paul du Vance , afternoon visit to museums or galleries and an evening walk in Nice. Take the second day to Villefranche , Eze or Monaco + Menton again with an afternoon-evening walk in Nice, and the third day go to Lucerne and Coiras, again you will have a whole afternoon and evening in Nice. I exclude, of course, the option if you went for a specific occasion and it requires you to stand there only, or if your goal is to visit only museums or galleries.

But my recommendation is to always take a step sideways , because you don’t know what’s around the corner and what you’ll miss.

Food, local culture and customs

Yes, I’ll say it again. I’m not a foodie tourist and I’m fussy about food. But try .

I had set off for Peru with the mindset that I would be on a diet. Well, yes, but no. Peru turned out to be an incredible culinary destination. What did I not try there?

Portugal – amazing cuisine and wine at exceptional prices. You know the Mediterranean cuisine and you know that there is no chance to make a mistake. However, it was the Indian cuisine that really excited my senses: A mix of flavors that shakes the spirit and the body.

I will end this post with a recommendation. Smile! Be thankful that you are there and that you had the opportunity to visit the places you want because many do not. Forget about the small setbacks or if something didn’t happen the way you wanted, and keep the good memories.

Be happy and make your dreams come true!

Dream on. Travel. Make it happen.
